Dear John (or whatever your name is, I’m really not sure),
We’re done. We’re breaking up. I am leaving you as one of your donors, and I’d like to explain why.
It all started less than a year ago when I made my first gift. I was so excited to be able to give to your organization. I care about your cause and thought you might be able to do something about it. I could definitely see a link between giving you something and getting something done.
So, I sent you some of my ...

George H.W. Bush made his political career using them. The great Winston Churchill is said to have written more than 100 of them on a typical a day. You know the power of using handwritten notes, but why do they work and what distinguishes a good note from a bad one? Why Notes WorkAlthough we live in the age of artificial intelligence and can communicate instantly with almost anyone across the globe, a handwritten note still wields amazing power. They are far more than just a charming relic from ...

Every Christian radio station is unique, with its own special challenges and local market conditions. But no matter where you are and no matter what you are facing, some principles are transcendent. In fact, I’ve found there are three things that never fail in any market, no matter how big or small the station.
1. Good Radio Improves Fundraising Results
Yes, what comes out of the speakers matters. I tip my hat to my friends Chuck Finney and John Frost, both outstanding programming cons ...

There are three big myths in major gift fundraising that we’ve uncovered in our work with hundreds of ministries across the country. Because we care about the work God is doing through you, I’d like to share these myths with you and along the way, point you toward success with major gifts.
Myth #1: It’s All About Asking For Money.
The truth is, major donor engagement revolves around relationship building much more than the actual moment when you ask for a gift. In fact, focus ...

Kellyanne Conway will go down in history as a genius pollster who saw an opening in the data that no one else seemed to understand. This opening allowed her boss, Donald J. Trump, to win an unprecedented political victory.
Here are three things you can learn from her as a fundraiser:
1. Look for the hidden, undeserved and possibly even forgotten people in your database.
Chances are, you are losing about half of your donors every year. First time donors drop off at an even higher rate, ofte ...

One of my favorite clients gave me this little axiom that has become part of my everyday work with Christian ministries across the country, “An attitude of gratitude produces altitude.”
I’ve never forgotten it because it’s so true! Gratitude is POWERFUL STUFF. God rewards the thankful. He loves generosity and cheerful giving. He will reward your ministry if you make expressing gratitude the centerpiece of your donor relations efforts.
Lack of Thankin ...

You probably think your fundraising letters, emails, newsletters and other donor communication are just fine.
After all, your mailings are colorful and well designed. They look modern and professional. They are loaded with facts and information designed to teach donors about your cause and give them sound, logical reasons to make another gift.
You send a lot of appeal letters. In fact, you send one almost every month. You also email a really cool e-newsletter chock full of the latest news and ...

Certain key phrases stand the test of time because they are easily remembered and often help summarize complex ideas. Usually they are true, too!
In the fundraising world, you’ll find no better example than the proverb that says:
“Your goal is to ask the right person…
for the right gift
at the right time
in the right way
for the right reasons.”
The Art of Biblical Stewardship
Though often quoted by development professionals across the spectrum, these worthy ...

I couldn’t believe my own eyes. In fact, I made a mistake because I saw the number and thought:“Oh, that can’t be right!”The number that threw me for a loop? Sixty-three percent of gospel rescue missions said they do not use wealth screening as the foundation of their major gifts program. (This number is based on Advocace’s 2016 Rescue Mission Development Outlook study.)Scandalously Bad StewardshipFriend, that is outrageous because wealth screening services, like our firm’s DonorCompassSM, helps ...

Major gifts work doesn’t take a vacation when we do. Although many donors are out of town, at the beach or enjoying family and leisure during the summer, many are actually more available to meet with us than at other times of the year. Additionally, this time of year affords major gift officers the opportunity to reassess and plan for the busy third and fourth quarter. Here are six strategies you can use to have success with major gifts this summer:
1. Review Your List
Even if you rece ...
