Board-Leader-Grow-MinistryYou can’t give away what you don’t have.  That’s why growing ministries are led by people who are consistently growing themselves—personally and professionally.

Think about your life to this point. Can you remember times of significant growth—physically, emotionally or spiritually?  The process of growth may not have been easy, but the end result made it worth the hard work of changing.

Being purposeful about growing doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to be intentional and continual. I like to think of it this way: Think it through, write it down, and then do it.

3 Keys to Grow As a Leader

I believe by keeping these three key ideas in mind, you will be able to start growing today—and keep growing as a leader for the rest of your life.

  1. Never Stay Satisfied with Current Accomplishments

Rick Warren says, “The greatest enemy of tomorrow’s success is today’s success.”

I have seen this happen again and again.  Ministries die because they decide that they have the corner market on how to do their thing and they stop asking how to get better.  When ministries die because they stop growing, there is great fall out.

Enjoy your success. Learn to celebrate it. Be present in the here and now and then move on to greater growth.

  2. Be a Continual Learner

Henry Ford said, “It’s been my observation that most successful people get ahead during the time other people waste.”

Dedication to growth not only enlarges your reach and increases your potential; it also motivates you.  It’s catchy. You will find that the more dedicated you become to personal growth, the less satisfied you will be to stay where you are.  You will want to keep learning because you are proving to yourself that learning is a useful tool.

  3. Stay dedicated to Growth

“You can never solve a problem with the same kind of thinking that created the problem in the first place.” —Albert Einstein

Stay focused!  Growth is not a short trip. You are on a journey. Remember why you are doing what you are doing.  There is a higher calling in your life than just arriving.

You are someone who matters deeply, just as you are today.  You are someone with purpose and influence into the lives around you.

The key to growing is not just knowing this, but really believing it is true and then moving because of it.  Growing comes from a deep resolve not to settle where you currently are.

Determine every day that you are going to keep moving and growing.

    Ask yourself these questions:

    • What area should I start with for personal development?
    • What do I want to do?
    • What is an idea I have that is out of my comfort zone that I can do right now?

Let’s talk about your personal growth plan or discuss a new vision for your ministry. God has a dream for you and I can think of no greater honor than to help you find it.
