How John 3:16 Mission Builds Major Donor Relationships with Friends
“I wanted to strengthen [our] development department,” said Lee Bartel, Director of Development at John 3:16 Mission.
John 3:16 Mission started in 1952 as a soup kitchen. And has grown into a vibrant ministry that houses homeless men and women, ministers to those struggling with low income, and helps people overcome addictions through a recovery program.
Lee knew Jeff Crabtree, Advocace Senior Consultant, and after a conversation about how Advocace could help, he decided it was time to partner with them to grow income and build deeper donor relationships.
“[Advocace] helped me see some things I needed to change…[And] has provided good counsel on the major gift officer program.”
Gordon Smith, Major Gift Manager at John 3:16, shared a story about building a donor relationship with a childhood friend. He said, “While rekindling our past I was told he and his wife’s interest were pretty close to our mission direction. I also learned that his current project was ending, and he was looking for the next one to get behind…”
“…After several lunches I made a soft ask to see the interest level of our current campaign, and he said he would pray to see where God was leading. Shortly after that we received a substantial verbal three-year commitment for our campaign and have received the first payment of three.”
Lee said, “We are getting better at major donor work and refining our gift officer work. [Advocace] brings fresh ideas to the table and backs up their counsel with wisdom gained by experience.”
