Supervising and directing people in an organization
A few months ago, the leader of the organization showed me a two-inch notebook. “Here’s the strategic plan we put together two years ago,” he said as he opened the book to show off their work. I read a few pages and congratulated them on the two-year old plan. The strategy was thoughtful and—although now dated a bit by the prolonged recession—wordsmithed to a fine tone. “So, how much have you accomplished?” I asked. My friend stammered a bit, “Accomplished? Well, we’re ...

When I heard Craig Parshall of the National Religious Broadcasters mention the saying he heard from a marine, I cringed with conviction. I (and several clients that I know very well) struggle with letting a project 'ship' before it is perfect. And that is where the problems start. If any product is too late to market, it really doesn't matter how good the product is. Large and small organizations make the same mistake: too late to market. Classic examples include the Edsel (Fo ...

The ear of the leader must ring with the voices of the people. Woodrow Wilson's quote caught my attention when Randy Bronkema discussed how leaders listen. In Inspired Development, Randy ties leadership, major gift development and listening together as keys for leaders of non-profit organizations. Check out his blog and let me know what you think. Meanwhile, Jerry Grimes writes in The Development Evangelist that the largest and most consistent gifts come from one special class of donors. Find ...

"I'm just too busy running the station to have a vision." Did that station manager actually say what I thought I heard on the phone? He basically confirmed it when he went on to say that he was having problems: Increasing income to hire more people Getting donors to understand why the station needed a new facility Keeping his staff motivated and heading the same direction Waking up excited about leading his station These issues are common among managers who don't tak ...

As the manager detailed that his business development efforts were not meeting his expectations, I asked him how many people his reps could handle at a time. He looked puzzled—then his eyes lit up. He got it. It was simple math. Advocace’s research shows that a successful business development representative can have about 17 active accounts per month. During the fourth quarter, the number might go up a bit, but it will go down about the same amount shortly thereafter as the a ...

Jim Seybert wrote a great devotional guide for leaders and managers titled, “One Year Mini for Leaders”. His entry for February 3 ties into several conversations I enjoyed over the last couple of weeks with clients and friends. I think you will enjoy it, too. Do Your Research “He waited another seven days and then released the dove again. This time it did not come back.” Genesis8:12 Imagine Noah’s disappointment when the dove came back the first time with nothing in its be ...

I am the President and Co-Founder of Advocace Media, the largest organization dedicated to helping Christian non-profit organizations grow business and donor income.
I began working in the advertising and media business during college years. After college I pursued but did not complete a Masters of Divinity program. I discovered that many churches and non-profits were attempting great things and I wanted to help. Organization leaders were so busy with administrative issues that the volunteers had an opportunity to engage the community. I fell in love with cause-related work. Years later, Phil Bandy and I started Advocace to help non-profits fund their vision.
Although I love working with people in non-profit organizations, I love my wife, Paula and my children far more. We live in a suburb of Dallas, Texas--close to where I spent my childhood.
My blog covers topics from leadership to management to media. I write about non-profits and their impact. I write about businesses and the way they can impact the culture.
