Five Things You Can do to Develop Major Donors

We all know that finding major donors is crucial for the success and impact of our organizations, yet few are doing the things they need to do to ensure that this part of their fundraising is a success.  Don’t wait for major donors to come to you.  Here are five simple things you can start doing today to begin developing major donors:

I. Pick up the Phone!

We cannot reach our maximum financial potential without the help of major donors.  You know that 1% of your database has the potential to give 35% of your total budget, so, do you have a major donor program?  It is proven fact that people will never say yes to a question they are never asked.  Starting is as easy as picking up your phone and setting appointments.  The Kingdom of God is never short of money, but you are leaving plenty of it on the table if you are afraid to take the first step and make the call.

II. Build Relationships

Before people will even buy into the vision of an organization, they will buy into its leader.  As executive directors, you must understand that major donors are looking at you to find out who you are and what you are about.  They want you to do the same for them.  Major donors are not going to give without your involvement.

III. Give them Something to Believe in

You know the value of your organization.  You know the power your organization has to make an impact.  You know and believe in the vision of what your organization is about.  Now—tell others.  Let them dream with you.  Show them what the future could look like.  Tell them what has happened in the past.  Teach them that donating makes them a part of the organization and a real part of the work that is being done.

IV. Teach Stewardship

If you want to make a difference, find those individuals that want to make a difference with you.  Do not be afraid to teach the truth and the power of generosity and God focused stewardship.  Trust me, major donors are looking for you!  Teaching the truth will lead them to fulfillment and consistent giving.

V. Pray, Pray, Pray!

Never underestimate the power that your prayers have.  God is involved in our organizations at every turn.  He is not intimidated by your budget.  He wants your organization to realize its vision and He uses giving and generosity to reach hearts and change lives.  Include God in all things and watch and remember as he is faithful and intercedes.  Your stories are going to bring great glory to our Lord!

About Randy Bronkema

Randy Bronkema photoI've spent most of my life helping non-profit organizations pursue their vision.  My passion is to help non-profits reach their communities and grow discipleship through development.

My work with Christian universities, Christian academies, missions groups, radio stations and local churches really gets me going.  Underneath all the work is a real desire to see leaders grab hold of the opportunity God has given them.

Whether major gift development, annual fund plans or donor strategy, I rely on many of the business disciplines from the corporate workplace at JC Penney and Amway Corporation.

I enjoy working with young men to become strong leaders in their families, workplaces and churches.  I started The Timothy Project a few years ago to work with men in my local community.
